Crickets and katydids are a hallmark of the summer night, and their enchanting songs are known to many… but did you know that we have nearly 70 species of them in Massachusetts alone, each with a distinct, identifiable call? Join the UMass Bee Campus Committee and Fernald Club for a stroll on Nocturnal Insect Night, and discover how the summer night comes alive! Watch colorful katydids and crickets emerge from the undergrowth to sing together in a great chorus, while daytime pollinators snuggle into flowers to wait out the night. Meet at the front of Fernald Hall. The walk will be about a mile in length, and you can find our intended path here. We will be taking several stops along the way. We will introduce how to use iNaturalist at the beginning of the event! Accessibility: This will be an outdoor event on a mix of paved paths and grass with uneven terrain. Benches are available throughout the walk and restrooms are located in nearby campus buildings. Masks are not required at this event (and are welcome!).
