Find Your Way: Map, Compass, and Natural Navigation with RecWell Adventure Programs Ages 18–90. Waivers required. Prerequisite for Chart a Course.
Paper maps and compasses work when phones fail. This two-hour workshop is split between the classroom and the field, covering foundational navigation skills-and the judgment to use them well-that hold up in any conditions.
You'll learn to read a topographic map, take and follow a bearing, adjust for declination, and calculate your personal pace count over real terrain. The field portion puts each skill into practice sequentially. You'll also cover triangulation for confirming position, essential orienteering vocabulary, and natural navigation cues (sun, stars, tree growth, prevailing wind) for backup awareness, not as a party trick.
Groups stay together throughout. No prior experience needed. This workshop is the prerequisite for Chart a Course, RecWell's team orienteering challenge.
Dress for the outdoors. All equipment provided.
